Marking the 20th Anniversary of Nirvana s debut album, Sub Pop will re-issue the Platinum Certified Bleach on November 3, 2009. This expanded double-LP will include a never-before-released live performance, special packaging and the first run of the double-LP will be on 180g white vinyl (the first run of the original LP was also on white vinyl). Originally recorded over three sessions with producer Jack Endino at Seattle s Reciprocal Recording Studios in December 1988 and January 1989, Bleach was released in June of 1989 and remains unequivocally/unsurprisingly Sub Pop s very favorite Nirvana full-length. The album initially sold 40,000 copies, but was brought into the international spotlight following the release and worldwide success of their 1991 sophomore effort, Nevermind. Subsequently Bleach went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the US alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan. This 20th Anniversary Edition has been re-mastered from the original tapes at Sterling Sound in a session overseen by producer Jack Endino. This edition will include an unreleased live recording of a complete February 9th, 1990 show at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. The show features performances of Love Buzz, About a Girl and a cover of The Vaselines song Molly s Lips and has been re-mixed from the original tapes by Endino (complete track listing below). A 16-page LP booklet which includes candid photos of the band not previously released to the public will also be included in this deluxe edition.

Bleach Your Works
Similar to Soundgarden's start, Bleach was a humble beginning for a band that was destined for greatness. And although Soundgarden came to be one of grunge's best, Nirvana became grunge's best. You can't deny that Nirvana did great things, but that was in 1991, which was two whole years after their humble beginning. So I'm going to do this in two ways: I'm going to bring forth the pros and cons.
So here are the pros: aside from Soundgarden's Ultramega OK album, Bleach is the best document of grunge's early days. Bleach is a combo of heavy and sludgy guitars and pounding drums merged together with punk speed and flavor with a healthful dose of punkish humor (see "Floyd the Barber" for this one) and some of these tracks become instant classics. Good examples of this are the tracks "Blew", "Negative Creep", and "Mr. Moustache". "Love Buzz" hooks you in with that alluring opening riff, and "About a Girl" is a precursor to the band's legendary Nevermind album. The lyrics are random, but most include the trademark angst of grunge.
Now the cons: this album is NOT a lost classic. A good portion of fans that came to be from Nevermind may be scared away from the album just like Soundgarden (more specifically Superunknown) fans might be cautious about Ultramega OK. As it is with almost every debut album of many great bands, the album is the result of a band that has not found their sound yet. Most of the tracks from a quick glance may sound like the same sludgy songs (with the exception of "Love Buzz") unless you take a closer look. But I will say that it is not the band's fault. The impact of Nevermind might have arrived two years earlier had Cobain not ignored his pop-writing tendencies due to the grunge scene and pressure from Sub Pop to keep it grunge. I'd say that it was a good idea that Nirvana cut free of Sub Pop, went for a major label, and embraced The Beatles-induced pop-influence.
So what's the verdict? If you're a hardcore Nirvana fan, or if you're looking for a good document on the rise of grunge, Bleach is a good choice. I can't say much else.
This particular re-issue has a live performance that is nearly 34 minutes. The performance includes the songs "Spank Thru", "Dive", and "Been A Son".
i love nirvana
This is a great album, and I love that it has the original recorded songs plus the live performance recording from the Pine Street Theater show back in '90. Bought it for my husband as a Christmas gift and he totally loved it. The actual records (there are two) are a white vinyl and both come in a plastic covering (instead of the paper sheets that you usually see with records). It also comes with a booklet insert with some pretty cool pictures of the band. A definite must-have for any big Nirvana fan.
THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER
You must have this AND their "Incesticide" album on vinyl and blast both as loud as you can. It will help vibrate the bugs out of their hiding places in you house! This is what Nirvana truly was before the slick production of "Nevermind" and "In Utero" came along and is true to their post-punk origins. This delux edition is a slap in the face of all the sellers on this website and Ebay that were and are trying to rip off not-so-freakin'-rich Nirvana fans by charging $500+ for an original white vinyl copy of this. To this day, I do not know what kind of crack they were (and still are) smoking.
a great re-issue
It's hard to believe that this album is 20 years old, but it stills sounds as good as it did when I first heard it in 1991.
The tracks have been remastered, so they have more volume and punch than the earlier CD releases. The live tracks are an added bonus that any Nirvana fan will appreciate.
It comes in a nice tri-fold eco pack and has a photo album in the center, and the CD in a sleeve on the right. The CD cover looks to have been an original Cobain artwork. It really looks nice, and sounds better than ever. I can't wait until Nevermind and In Utero are re-mastered, because I'll definitely be buying them.
The same but different
This CD sound almost the same as the original recording but somehow it feels different (better). If you are a Nirvana fan, buy it.
