4 stars but.......
This compilation is going to be criticized and praised over and over. No one is going to be completely happy with it. But this is my take on it. First and foremost, the two new songs on here, "Celebration" and "Revolver" are EXCELLENT. Without a doubt. If "Revolver" doesn't put Madonna back on the radio, nothing will.
The problem here is the fact that some of the omissions on this collection are not easy songs to find. For that reason alone this should have been a 3 cd collection, at least. "Gambler", "Spotlight", "The Look of Love", "American Pie" among others should have been included. For no other reason than they were only on soundtracks and not on Madonna's full lengths, except for Spotlight on the remix album. Luckily for me i have them but they deserved to be on here. Other omissions that I'm stumped on are, "Rain", "This used to be my Playground", "American Life", "Angel", "Love dont Live Here Anymore", "Deeper and Deeper", "Bad Girl" and the grossely underrated "You'll See".
This is an icon. Someone should have thought this out a little bit more.
Good but a true "Celebration" would need 3 CDs
This is a good collection, but it could have been way better if a little more imagination was put in the mix. C'mon now, this is a Madonna celebration, there's no way you can sum her up in 2 CDs. For starters, there should have been 3 CDs. Period. The first CD could have collected her hits from her first four albums from her blazing self titled debut album to "Like A Prayer". The second CD could have started off with the absolutely fantastic Vogue (From her 1990 album "I'm Breathless"), wrapped around "Erotica" and "Bedtime Stories" along with her ballads. It's a crime not to have included the song "This Used To Be My Playground". The second CD could also get a good load from "Ray of Light". The 3rd CD could have collected all her hits from "American Life" to "Hard Candy". It could have been perfect. Compilations are like that, there's always something which gets left out. This one is surely one of them. However, the Cover Art is very good coming after the absolutely terrible cover of "Hard Candy".
Definite Misses:
True Blue, This Used To Be My Playground, Love Don't Live Here Anymore, You'll See, Love Tried To Welcome Me, Don't Stop, Love Song (with Prince), Human Nature.
Verdict: Good (sigh!).
Celebration is not Immaculate
Im a die hard fan and I can honestly say that I'm a bit disappointed with the edited versions on this compilation. The ONLY version seriously worth having is Express Yourself. After 20 years someone finally decided it was a good idea to release the ORIGINAL MTV world premiere video version. And just when I start to get excited over this track I realize that this version is also slightly edited. All other versions are a mixture of "original album versions" such as Like A Prayer and La Isla Bonita and "Immaculate Collection versions" such as Crazy For You and Open Your Heart. As much as I love Madonna, I'll never understand why she chooses to edit her songs for compliation release. The originals are so much better! Also, if she's celebrating 25 years in the business, why exclude some of her staple songs like True Blue, Angel, Causing a Commotion, This Used To Be My Playgroud .. etc? I know this wont stop die hard fans from buying this disc, but it could have been ten times better. I appreciate the effort Madonna! I still love you, just not your marketing genious or project coordinator.
Going back to Express Yourself, I was at least glad to know that after 20 years the original world premiere version can be found on the Celebration DVD. That's my only reason to celebrate.
CELEBRATION DEFECTIVE NOT HAPPY AT ALL
Well first of all I give it 5 stars only because it's a great collection. But I'm not happy at all my 2-cd set came out defective some other people I know have the same problem in the U.S. if you pay close attention to the song MUSIC you can hear some kinda of pop or click that is not supposed too be there at first I though it was my stereo speaker but no it's not I heard it on my headphones and is the cd.... I even compare my old album of music and compare both track and yes the celebration track of the song Music is defective. not only that EROTICA skips towards almost the end of the track and DRESS YOU UP was cut the way it starts from the original it sounds like they press record when the song had alredy start playing not good. and now I don't know why warner bros. won't say something about this I think it's really wrong of them.... I paid money for this and my cd is a mess :( can someone help me get the word out I love madonna since 1984 and can't believe this happen too this collection some people may not hear the defect but if you pay close attention you can notice it.
Odd radio edits
The collection is decent, I def would've swapped a few songs out for others but overall its ok. The remastering to the older tracks is nice but some of the edits of the songs are weird, like "4 Minutes" for example.
