Reviews:
Almost Whole Oates When it has came down to great duos, nobosy in the music industry has been known for longevity like Daryle Hall & John Oates. Since the 2 of them united at Temple University, they have made some of the best guilty pleasure songs that still keep on standing the test of time. With over 40 years of performing great pop music, the feeling of their songs still are wonderful to listen to. Yet, it is so sad that Hall & Oates made the decision not to record any new material, and just focus in on touring with all the classics. Nevertheless, the classics they've made have been placed into so many different greatest hits collections over the past several years, from the successful Ultimate Hall & Oates from 2004 which later on was named Essentail Hall & Oates, to the recently issued Playlist compilation. But, when it has came to it, they just haven't had a definitive boxed set. Well, now that is highly shown, but it nearly feels like it is completely full of Hall & Oates.
Do What You Want, Be What You Are: The Music Of Daryl Hall & John Oates, is a 4 disc boxed set, which focuses in on their biggest songs from their 5 decade career, as well as never-before issued live material and demos from their works on the Atlantic Records days, to their biggest hits from the glory days from RCA in the 70's and 80's, all the way to their return with 2002's Do It For Love. The songs have all been remastered well, and include a lot of their greatest songs including She's Gone, Maneater, Do It For Love, the intimate and soulful One On One, and Missed Opportunity. The collection mainly though highlights never-before released live recordings and tracks that were not on any reflection of Hall & oates, collections including the upbeat All The Way From Philadelphia, which sounds like it has reminisence to Elton John's Philadelphia Freedom, and Storm Warning. The new songs sound good, but there honestly are a few of their songs that absolutely were surprisingly overlooked that honestly should've been a part of the collection such as Downtown Life, Promise Ain't Enough from the underrated 1996 album Marigold Sky, as well as their cover of I'll Be Around from their last album 2004's Our Kind Of Soul, as well as some songs from Daryl's solo works like Cab Driver and Dreamtime.
Nevertheless, Do What You Want, Be What You Are: The Music of Daryl Hall & John Oates isn't completely definitive as what could've been, but it is honestly a delightful treat for hard core fans, as well as anyone whom hasn't yet heard of a diddy from Hall & Oates from their 40 years of making great music in the spotlight. It is a straight-forward and strong re-introduction of some of the greatest pop songs ever, but there were a few missing Maneaters to come around.
