Guitarist/vocalist Ben Bridwell and bassist Mat Brooke formed Band Of Horses in 2004 after the dissolution of their nearly ten-year run in northwest melancholic darlings Carissa's Wierd. Carissa's Wierd trafficked in sadly beautiful orchestral pop, whose songs told unflinching stories of heartbreak and loss, leavened with defeatist humor. Band Of Horses rises from those ashes. Buoyed by Bridwell's warm, reverb-heavy vocals (which channel a strange brew of Wayne Coyne, Neil Young, and Doug Martsch), the group's woodsy, dreamy songs ooze with amorphous tension, longing, and hope. Both raggedly epic and delicately pensive, this is an album painted gorgeously in fragile highs and lows.

Interesting
My 17 year old son who plays guitar in a seriously hard driving almost metal band has been raving about 'Band of Horses' for a couple years. Given the shows we've seen together.... Metallica, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Kiss, Alter Bridge, Roger Waters, etc., I assumed this would be another cranking rock band. He asked for tickets to see Band of Horses on New Year's Eve in Atlanta and I figured if I was going to see these guys he should burn me a copy of their tunes so I could get a listen before we went. Imagine my surprise when I heard this. Of course he loves 'Explosions In The Sky' as well, so maybe his taste is a lot more varied than I give him credit for......
After several listens to both albums, they're kind of growing on me. Maybe it's me, but I hear some Neil Young influence in some of the songs. And that's not a bad thing. Not that every track is dynamite, a couple of them I just skip over 'cause I don't like them. But then even some of my all time favorite artists lay some stinkers down that aren't worth listening to. This is just some nice pleasant sounding mellow rock that you can either really get into or just have it on in the background. At this point, I've listened to the disc in the car about three times over the last couple days. I don't have any liner notes, so I don't know the song titles. Yet. Again, I don't think it's great or amazing. But it's not bad and easy to listen to.
I've seen a couple comments about how this sounds like 'My Morning Jacket'. I'm sure there were people whining about how 'My Morning Jacket' sounded like someone else before that. It's hard these days to find any band that doesn't at least somewhat remeind you of someone else.
Too many average songs
The funeral is a great song. But, unfortunately, the rest of the songs are average compositions far from the quality of the biggest hit. Everything All the Time
Compulsively listenable
If you don't know who Band of Horses is, you soon will. They are on the verge of huge hugeness. Nearly every song on Everything All the Time is a gem. The best part of the album is that it seems to get better with each listen. You pick out more things, more hidden instruments and sounds. It is a beautifully rendered gem of an album, one of the few that is universally liked by EVERYONE I know. If you are a fan of good music, you owe it to yourself to get this album. Also, get their follow-up, Cease to Begin, while you're at it.

Earnest debut of alt-pop-twang can crib too much from MMJ's earlier sound, but in almost all simplistic songwriting still retains a doe-eyed soul. Hear it for the lush acoustic closer alone.
I really enjoy listening to the band on the weekend and in the evening
When I'm doing busy work, I really enjoy listening to this band - I enjoy the vocals, lyrics and performance on their Cease album. I was lucky - I got 4 free songs from 2 albums on music.download.com - and after I downloaded and listened, I decided to buy an album.
