Not My Kind Of Music
I was given this CD and was not at all familiar with Brandi Carile. I have listened to it several times now and I have to say that it just doesn't do a lot for me. Brandi's voice reminds me a bit of Melissa Etheridge (who I do enjoy) and k.d. lang, only a few notes higher than either singer. As for the genre, it leans more towards country than rock. Brandi has one of those voices I would enjoy listening to live in a bar, but as for playing it in my car or on the stereo, I just want to turn it off. I will say that there are some great lyrics and it is more the vocals that bother me than the songs.
Two albums, in one
Brandi Carlile has a great sound, but the album should have been split into two. Half of the album has a folky/country sound and the other half is an interesting, unique Indie sound.
My favorites were "Pride & Joy", "That Year" and "Before it Breaks."
"Before it Breaks" has a beautiful opening...heart-wrenching and poignant. "Pride & Joy" would make a great soundtrack single for a movie, etc. It is very thought-provoking and has a wonderfully haunting melody. Think Roy Orbison with 2 X chromosomes...
I don't really get into country or folk, but as far as that genre goes, she does an excellent job. "Dying" Day" reminds me of a mix of Willie Nelson and Juice Newton. It has pretty harmonies and great lyrics. "Touching the Ground" sounds like a Loretta Lynn throwback with a little Bonnie Raitt added.
All in all, a good album. I think she has a great career ahead of her.
WOW!
I had the pleasure of seeing Brandi back in Baltimore this past week in a large venue playing cuts from this new CD and from priors as well as some covers. I love the CD and have been obsessed with her music in a way I haven't been with any genre or performer since maybe the Beatles as a kid.
Do yourself a favor and enjoy her CD. Learn the words so that when you catch her LIVE in your area- and let me say "run, don't walk" -you can sing out loud with the rest of the crowd when the opportunity arises.
Great quality work and sound on the CD, but you have to catch the on stage charm which will anchor you to the sounds even more. Whether Brandi and the twins "unplug" acoutically (even in a large venue)or go electric bouncing around the stage, it's why I go to see live music. Wow talent- and they are having a great time-so will you.
The first 2 were great. This is the best!
Been listening to it at work and at home, multiple times. Can't get enough. If you don't have a copy, get one, now! And listen to it, loud! :-) Enjoy.
pleasantly surprised
I didn't know what to expect, this was my first time hearing Brandi Carlile. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is definitely on my new faves list.
