For the hopelessly nostalgic
I bought this cd because of "Man on Your Mind" but as I listened through, I couldn't believe how many songs I recognised from when I was a kid, but didn't know who sang them. I'm happy to have this cd in my collection.
BEWARE if you get attached to specific versions!
I wish I could give variable #s of stars... one for most of the collection (5), one for specific songs (-347).
I swear, if I'd had any idea the legal situation for this band was going to get so snarled up, I wouldn't have gotten so attached to them back in the 70's. Trying to find a download with the same versions of the same songs is impossible, & some of the 'replacement' versions are beyond hideous, IMHO. I realize that some folks just like the sound & aren't concerned about one version or other; I'm happy for them, at least in the context of LRB, b/c the rest of us are spirally torqued. For instance, if (like me) you got utterly attached to one specific version (i.e. the hit single) of "Take It Easy On Me," even if you haven't heard it in a decade this travesty sounds like the world's worst lounge singer/karaoke reject. Major cringe factor. But, the original version of "TIEOM" does appear on "Definitive Collection." (And their naming could use some work, too...'Definitive Collection,' 'Definitive Greatest Hits...' sheesh.) The rest of the most popular "Greatest Hits" are original versions, on the "Def GH," 'tho.
And I also swear the "Cool Change" available here has better sound than the one on iTunes' "Definitive Collection," so who knows what all's going on....
I do know I've spent about half the day trying to get the right versions rather than buy all the blasted downloads from both stores and then have to weed through the resultant mess. Argh.
Wonderful ... Better than the original cassette recording!
Bought the original on cassette tape back in the early 80's and loved it. Heard LRB live last month and aftward ordered this CD on Amazon, and it is wonderful. The remastering is great ... even better sound reproduction than the original cassette. If you are a LRB fan, you must have this in your collection ... if you're not, you should get this anyway. It's great music!!!
Love This Music!
This is one of my all-time favorite albums, which is weird because I've heard several of LRB's other songs and I can't stand them. Every song on here is great and was either a chart-topping single or was/is a staple on the radio stations of several different formats. I could listen to Cool Change, Reminiscing, Lady, and It's A Long Way There over and over again. Love 'em.
Alternate Mixed Versions on Greatest Hits
There are three alternate mixes that appear on some copies of this CD. 1) Man on Your Mind (With horns), 2) Night Owls (Heavy Guitar solos), 3) Take It Easy on Me (Wayne Nelson vocals). These versions were recorded at the same time as the final versions. The producer George Martin (Beatles Producer) had produced these versions. These are alternate original mixes that were considered for the original release. Most LRB band members were not happy with the alternate versions being released on the expanded greatest hits in 2000. None the less, they are interesting.
