BE
Very well written songs. Love Conor's Ahead of the curve, it is in heavy rotation. Excellent pairing of talented artists. I love all of them solo and as a super group. I know people want Conor to do another BE project, but he has definitely expanded his horizons and has matured as an artist. I really cannot complain. His song writing never dissapoints. I even liked the upbeat nature of the MVB. I have seen BE live, MVB live and hope to see the Monsters of Folk live. Lot's to like about this CD. Definitely one of 2009's best!
Travelling Wilbury's for a new generation
Four great song writers got together to produce a pop masterpiece. Its simple and rhythmic with great harmonies. Every track could be a single. Its not your father's Morning Jacket.
Thoroughly Underwhelmed!
Wow, this fell WAY short of my expectations. Frankly, I'll delete most of the downloaded album just out of boredom. Only one song, Dear God, is something that I look forward to hearing again. There is nothing bad about the rest, but I can't say much good about it either. I found this collection of songs to be jarringly non-cohesive... far worse than a movie soundtrack! It feels soul-less. Plus I think it is way past time for M.Ward and Jim James to tone down the reverb tricks, it sounds REALLY trite here. And finally, to label themselves "folk" is comical... this album is slicker in its sound and production-value than Sarah McLachlan's music (who I like a lot, but never think of as a folkie). Now a disclaimer.... I don't pay attention to lyrics, so maybe I'm missing out on how amazingly clever each and every the tune is.
Takes a Few Spins to Get a Handle
It's hard to categorize this album. Folk, rock, country? That's because the songs are a bit scattered. I gave 9 a loose 5 Star rating though I like some better than others. I gave the remaining 6 songs 4 Stars (for professionalism) although most were not my cup of tea.
Why?
Why would M. Ward and Jim James, two of the best guys out there today, team up with the craptacular bright eyes. I was able to listen to this for free, and im really glad i didnt buy it on an impulse. Bright eyes is way to overrated. Also monsters of folk is the worst name for a band I have ever heard.
