Amazing though it is, the story of how Melody Gardot overcame the effects of a near-fatal accident to become one of the vocal sensations of 2008 is not the most extraordinary thing about the 23-year-old Philadelphia singer-songwriter. It is simply that here is a voice in a million; one that touches the soul. Melody's debut album `Worrisome Heart' introduced, in The Sunday Times' words: "a remarkable talent by any measure", with songs of quiet, wistful poetry in arrangements that "ooze after-hours sophistication". Yet the follow-up, for release in April 2009, marks a substantial leap forward. `My One And Only Thrill' is an intensely creative milestone, transcending genre distinctions of jazz and blues to offer a haunting personal musical statement that will appeal to all music-lovers. As with her acclaimed live shows she captures and holds her audience in the palm of her hand. These eleven songs, covering a wide range of emotions, are all her own except for an irresistible, Brazilian take on Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It would take a heart of stone to remain unmoved by the poignant title track My One And Only Thrill. And when the album is finished (as Irving Berlin wrote truly) the song is over, but the Melody lingers on . . .

Melody Gardot - My new Favorite!!
Melody Gardot is an incredible vocalist and this CD is just amazingly good. No matter what your musical preference if you appreciate vocal artistry you will love Melody Gardot!
Amazing new talent
I'm not into female vocalists, at least not any current ones. I listened to Nora Jones and she was okay, but I just discovered Melody Gardot on Amazon and my life has changed. This is the most talented, sophisticated, soulful, melodious and inspiring singer I have heard since Edith Piaf. Melody has an intimate, yet breezy voice with nuance and style that has to be heard. I did not think I would ever hear a voice like this again in my life. I think I'm in love.
If you like jazz, New Orleans, a beautiful voice, a very tight band and orchestra, and just a very unique and sensuous and original talent, then this is the girl for you. Melody Gardot!!! Please make more recordings, fast!!!
WOW
I first heard of Melody on the local jazz station in Seattle and had to try out her cd. Bought this one and Worrisome Heart and haven't been this pleased with a music purchase in a long time. Melody is an amazing talent, writes her own songs and has an incredible voice and only in her 20's. An old soul in a young case. Can only imagine how she will progress, intend to follow her closely. Hope more cd's are on the way as its so nice to put the ones I have on and relax. Very soothing, no "in your face" here.
Melody Makes Great Music Against Overwhelming Odds
Melody Gardot is a young songstress from Philadelphia who, despite suffering injuries from a bicycle accident at age 19, overcame overwhelming odds to give us such colorful and bluesy music while using music as therapy to compensate for her earlier tragedy. Most notable though is the song "Who Will Comfort Me?" which can be considered a testament to her ongoing struggle with her injuries and her quest for a full life. She is one of the more interesting and unique of the jazzy artists which I would recommend everyone give a good listen. Melody is truly Amazing with a capital A.
No Sophomore Slump For Melody Gardot
My One And Only Thrill is Melody Gardot's sophomore effort, but fear not. She encounters no slump on these twelve songs. Fans of her debut CD Worrisome Heart will notice that My One And Only Thrill has the fuller sound of a more accomplished musician. In addition to guitar and vocals, Gardot has taken all of the piano duties as well. Every song has guitar and piano as well whereas it was often one or the other on Worrisome Heart. However the biggest progression is in the introduction of orchestral strings into half of the tracks (1, 5, 6, 9-12). I liken this CD to Diana Krall's When I Look in Your Eyes (see my review). The strings add a broad, sweeping element and a more classical tone. The effect is most striking on her interpretation of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" which also features a Brazilian rhythm to boot. Gentle listener, you are definitely not in Kansas anymore! It sounds odd to describe, but it comes off magically. Other standout string tracks include "My One And Only Thrill" and "Our Love Is Easy".
The non-string tracks also hold plenty of intrigue. "Your Heart Is As Black As Night" is a boldly driven piano number that also features muted trumpet. The sound says 30's speakeasy. You would expect to see sharp suits in a smoky room with the spotlight on the small jazz ensemble performing the song. She also makes liberal use of scat on other songs such as "If The Stars Were Mine" and "Who Will Comfort Me". Want more variety? Give the Latin sounding French number "Les Etoiles" (the stars) a try.
Gardot wrote all of the songs on My One And Only Thrill (save "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"). Like many young female singer/songwriters she focuses most of her material on love and relationships. She handles this without ever being sappy or cheesy, though, which is more uncommon for her age. While her topics are not unique, her vocal delivery is. Her alto is very rich, and I can't think of anyone similar.
When you put it all together, My One And Only Thrill is an impressive CD. Gardot deftly handles multiple styles mixing jazz, classical, and world music styles. I can't wait for what her third CD will have to offer. If you aren't familiar with Melody Gardot, you need to be. She is primed to be a star for a long time to come.
