Tell `Em What Your Name Is!, the debut album from Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears is set for release by Lost Highway on March 17. Formed in Austin, TX, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears is an eight-piece, garage-soul ensemble featuring groove-laden guitars, penetrating brass and a fiery frontman who exudes power and attitude. Experiencing the raw energy of Black Joe's performances, accompanied by The Honeybears' masterful backing is the equivalent of a kick to the stomach. Their gut-shot style, felt in such songs as "Gunpowder", "Master Sold My Baby" and "I'm Broke", draws directly from their classic soul, R&B and blues influences. Inspiration from artists such as Otis Redding and The Bar-Kays, James Brown and Lightning Hopkins are clearly present in their songs and live shows, but Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears inject a full-tilt, unabashedly brash element to this old-school style. Tell `Em What Your Name Is! was produced by Jim Eno of Spoon, and recorded, mostly live in the studio, in Austin, TX.

Reviews:

Funky, Horn-Fueled Soul/R&B Shouter Revival
This album is a heck of a lot of fun to listen to. Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears do a very admirable job recalling the classic funk-infused & horn driven R&B records of the 60's. Like other reviewers, I find their style very reminiscent of the great James Brown, even down to Mr. Lewis' powerful & highly-energetic vocals. At only 30 minutes in length, the only real fault I found with this album was it left me wanting more when it was over. Do yourself a favor, get this CD & travel back in time with this collection of what [...] called "hip-shaking old-school groove". Highly recommended.

Good band; poor singer.
The musicians are fine, but the singer is a real disappointment. I saw the band last night on Craig Ferguson's show, and it honestly sounded as though Lewis was singing in the wrong key. Then again, his vocal range seems to be so limited that it's hard to tell. He's certainly no James Brown.

Good stuff
I heard this band on internet radio and bought the CD. The whole album is great, kind of James Brown-ish with a rocking beat. I will definately buy more as they are released and I'm hoping they tour the North East.

rockin' like james brown
Excellent debut album. Great music, horns/guitar, funny lyrics, and a powerful voice with a twinge of James Brown. There is alot of rather generic blues coming out lately, but this is definitely something different.

Welcome back, Jake and Elwood!!,
There is a British legend that King Arthur (he of the Round Table) is sleeping underground until he wakes to deal with the greatest crisis that will ever threaten the island of Britain. Similarly we've always known that in a dark cave somewhere, possibly in the Catskills or even the Appalachians, the Legendary Blues Brothers have been hibernating, ready to be revived in a time of need. That time is clearly now, because Black Joe Lewis and his Honeybears' latest CD is plainly Jake and Elwood brought back to life, dusted down for the twenty first century and brought blazing back into the limelight. Minus all the "Minnie the Moocher" nonsense of course, and with added "parenteral advisory lyrics". All this is by way of a compliment. Terrific good time hard-driving, brass-heavy blues music. Great fun and well worth buying.
